Gillingham make double signing

Gillingham Football Club have added to their squad by announcing the signings of Adam Barrett and Myles Weston.

Barrett joins the club on an initial one year deal with an option for a further year from Bournemouth for an undisclosed fee.

The 32 year old centre back found chances hard to come by down on the South coast and the former Southend United captain will bring vast experience to the Gillingham defence having made over 450 appearances in the Football League.

Meanwhile, Weston has signed for The Gills on a two year deal after leaving Brentford.

Twenty four year old winger Weston has spent the past three seasons with Brentford after two years with Notts County.

Brentford Manager Uwe Rösler told the Bees official website: “Myles is a fantastic professional and I have spoken with him many times about how much playing time he will get with us.

“With our preferred system not including wingers, we felt he would get limited game time this season.

“Myles and I have a great relationship and whenever we have spoken we have always tried to find a way for him to play First Team football.

“This is a move that will be of great benefit to Myles and is a great opportunity for him.

“We simply could not guarantee him First Team football at Brentford and he has moved somewhere where he will play more often.

“I wish him all the best at Gillingham, I hope he grabs the opportunity with both hands and I hope he has a successful future.

“Everyone at Brentford feels the same.”

Both players will go straight into the Gillingham squad to face Bradford City in the opening league fixture of the new season at Priestfield on Saturday afternoon.

Gillingham boss Martin Allen told the club’s official website: “Yesterday evening we agreed with Bournemouth for the signing of Adam Barrett on a one year contract with an option for a second year. Adam has had a tremendous career and has experienced three promotions as a player and captain. He trained with us this morning and will go into our squad for tomorrow’s game.

“We agreed yesterday afternoon with Brentford that Myles Weston can join us on a two year contract. I have watched Myles many times and he adds another dimension with speed and ability to play in wide areas. Myles will also go into our squad for tomorrow’s game.

“We have been after both of these players for several weeks now. They both have good experience of getting promotion from this division and with these two we get leadership, goals, experience, speed and excitement.”

Meanwhile, Allen also confirmed the club had received the international clearance for striker Deon Burton and he too will be in the squad to face Bradford City.
