Gillingham Ladies cruised to the title in style as they thrashed their Norwich counterparts 13-0.
Jack Wheeler’s side went into the game at K Sports on Sunday afternoon sitting top of the league and safe in the knowledge that their position was almost unassailable.
Meanwhile, Norwich Ladies travelled to Kent with just nine players following two bereavements inside the space of the previous 48 hours making their uphill task almost impossible.
It was understandably The Gills that dominated from the off as their opponents set up with a 4-2-2 formation, but it was soon broken down by the talented Charlotte Gurr, sweeping through the Norwich backline to score on four minutes.
Just four more minutes were on the clock when Gurr grabbed hers and Gills’ second, in almost identical fashion, waltzing through the Norwich defence before slotting home.
Gurr only had to wait until the twenty minute mark to make it 3-0 when she headed goalwards, saw the ball come back off the frame of the goal, only to head home at the second attempt.
It was 4-0 soon after as Grace Seely’s cross from the left was deflected home by Fliss Gibbons at the near post.
There were just 31 minutes on the clock when Jenny Newman thundered home from the edge of the box, prompting Norwich to switch to a 5-2-1 formation to keep the onslaught at bay.
It almost worked, until Fliss Gibbons slotted home on the stroke of half time to make it 6-0 at the break.
Any hopes of any respite were not realised as Norwich went down to just seven outfield players, adopting a pragmatic 4-2-1 formation in the second half.
Their hopes of stemming the flow didn’t pay dividends though as an own goal from Aimee Durrent made it 7-0 just seconds after the restart.
A neat piece of football saw April Bowers link up well with Gurr before clipping the ball past the advancing Norwich keeper to make it 8-0.
With fans now beginning to lose count, the Norwich keeper then had to be withdrawn due to injury, forcing another reshuffle, making it just six outfield players.
The numerical advantage for The Gills was soon evident and they made it 9-0 not long after as there was the most bizarre goal of the game. An attempted clearance from the Norwich box cannoned off Gibbons and the wicked deflection wrong footed the stand in keeper and nestled in the goal.
Double figures came up in due course and it was Gurr that grabbed her fourth of the afternoon, seeing her strike from the edge of the area hit the stand in keeper on the way into the net.
Seconds after Gurr’s withdrawal and the introduction of Bethany Nugent, it was 11-0 as Newman fired in.
Nugent was to get herself on the scoresheet too as her physical presence paid dividends as The Gills swarmed all over the depleted Norwich defence.
The icing was well and truly put on the cake with minutes to go as Gibbons rounded off the scoring, tricking her way into the box and firing past the poor Norwich stand in.
Referee Christopher Clarke’s final whistle was greeted with joy by the title winning Gillingham side, whilst brought welcome relief to a Norwich team that didn’t disgrace themselves on a very difficult afternoon.
The final home game of the season saw The Gills presented with the league title, rightly won at ease in a league they’ve been more than comfortable in.
Promotion should see greater challenges for a Gillingham side that really look they are going places.
