Gillingham game in some doubt

Gillingham’s League One clash with Crewe Alexandra set for Saturday at the Priestfield Stadium is in some doubt due to Covid.

With the number of cases across the country rapidly rising, Gillingham appear to have been hit hard by the pandemic with the club being forced to issue a statement on Thursday morning, confirming staff had been told to keep away from the ground.

The statement reads:

“Given a number of positive COVID tests this morning amongst staff members, the Chairman has decided that, in the interests of safety of all personnel, the stadium should be closed immediately and staff asked to return to their homes. More details will follow.”

Manager Steve Evans was set to host his weekly press conference at Priestfield on Thursday morning along with defender Rhys Bennett, but that hasn’t gone ahead.

With staff unable to come into Priestfield, it has to cast some doubt as to whether Saturday’s game will go ahead.

The one advantage of having Saturday’s game postponed would be that it would allow Steve Evans more time to get his injured players fit and possible new additions in January.
