Gilham to make Touring Car return

Tony Gilham will return to the British Touring Car Championship from the next round at Rockingham after joining forces with Geoff Steel Racing.

The 32 year old who lives in Dartford started his debut season in the series with the Triple Eight Vauxhall Vectra squad, but budget issues forced him to leave before last weekend’s Knockhill meeting.

Now Gilham will drive a GSR BMW 320, which Dave Newsham raced before parting company with the team earlier this season.

“They want to get back into touring cars and so do I,” said Gilham, who lies 16th in the standings.

“We’ve been in talks with several partners and we’ve got a few more sponsors. It’s a smaller team, but it makes commercial sense.”

The BMW will be normally aspirated at Rockingham, but the squad plans to switch to a turbo engine soon.

“Hopefully we’ll see the turbo car before the end of the year,” said Gilham.

“We’re looking at staying in touring cars in the years to come.”
