A young Addicks team, captained by Chris Solly, went down to a 1-0 defeat against Ebbsfleet on Wednesday evening.
The game was played in hot, humid conditions that were uncomfortable for football.
Charlton fans saw George Tucudean in action for the first time and former Southampton – and briefly Bolton – midfielder, Andy Robinson was due to be on the bench.
Zak Ansah pulled a muscle during the warm up, with Robinson taking his place in the starting line-up. Robinson is currently on trial at The Valley.
The game was a lacklustre affair that was, perhaps fittingly, settled by a disputed penalty. Referee, Dave Rock, adjudged that Fleet captain, Daryl McMahon, was fouled in the area and Matt Godden despatched the penalty for the decisive goal.
The main talking point was saved for after the game when Bob Peeters announced that Reza Ghoochannejhad is due to report back to Sparrows Lane on Thursday. The player’s future will be discussed then, though his departure from The Valley looks a formality. Here’s what Peeters had to say about the striker:
“If you don’t want to be at Charlton then you don’t need to train with the first team. He needs to tell me whether he stays or not, that’s the most important thing because we have a very good group. We have a competitive team, and we are building a very competitive team, so we only want players who are 100% with their heads at Charlton.
“If he wants to go, ok he deserves it and I wish him the best of luck. If he wants to come in and just be fit and go for a transfer, then he needs to train with the Under-21s.
“The only thing I knew is that he asked our board to go for a transfer. We said he deserved it and could go, but now he comes back in, so I need a chat with him tomorrow.
“We will see what happens, but for me it is important that if he gives me a sign he wants to be involved, and he wants to start in the project we are building, then I’m very happy with him because he is a very good player.
“He can be a very good player but if he just comes back because the deal is not done yet, then I don’t want him in my squad,” said Peeters.
