Kent athletes Adam Gemili and Jack Green booked their places at the Olympics with fine performances at the trials in Birmingham on Saturday.
Eighteen year old Gemili qualified for the Olympics by finishing second in the 100 metres final behind Dwain Chambers with a time of 10.29 seconds.
The former Dartford Grammar School pupil had this to say to the BBC after the race, said: “I can’t believe it, I don’t know what to say.”
“Now I have run the standard and finish in the top two, I will speak to my coach about what to do next.”
Meanwhile, Green booked his place at London 2012 by finishing second in the 400 metre hurdles behind World Champion Dai Greene.
The 20 year old from Snodland recorded a time of 49.88 seconds to secure himself one of the three spots on offer to GB athletes for this summer’s games.
“It’s nice that it’s done and I can tell people that I’m going to the Olympics,” said the European under-23 champion.
“It was eventful, especially as I messed it up so much. On the back straight, I was thinking ‘oh God, why are they here? I should up the front with Dai’ but to actually finish that close to him when that was probably the worst race I’ve ever run was actually quite reassuring.
“It’s more of a relief than anything because obviously I set the A standard both this year and last year, and I’ve beaten everyone else in the country apart from Dai so it’s kind of what I expected but you still have to do it.”
Both Gemili and Green could be joined by Ashford’s Lisa Dobriskey at the Olympics as she booked her place in Sunday’s 1500 metre final.
