Furlong makes Holcombe departure

Holcombe Hockey Club have confirmed that Wales International Rhodri Furlong has departed the club following the conclusion of the 2023/24 campaign.

Furlong, whose brother Gareth has today been selected for the Paris 2024 Olympics, spent two seasons with Holcombe and was a key part of the midfield under Barry Middleton for those two seasons.

The Welshman was a nightmare to face for many an opposition, his tenacity and defensive awareness providing an important screen in front of the backline as Holcombe finished last season with one of the strongest defensive records in the Premier Division.

Often underrated, his ability on the ball and passing often helped attacks forward at pace, too.

On his departure, Furlong said: “I’ve loved the two years that I’ve spent at Holcombe and would like to thank everyone at the club for making me feel so welcome and valued.

“I’ve been very fortunate to play with some excellent players and blokes and while I’m sad to be moving on, I have no doubt that the future is bright for Holcombe.”

Club President David South added: “I’ve seen Rhodri’s game improve greatly in the two years that he spent with us, it has been a pleasure.

“We wish Rhodri well and thank him for his service over the last two years.”

He was a part of the team that qualified for the Euro Hockey League for 2023/24 courtesy of beating hosts Surbiton at League Finals weekend in April 2023 and then travelled to Barcelona for the KO16 as Holcombe beat Racing Club de France 4-2 before losing 1-0 to hosts Real Club de Polo in the KO8.
