Gillingham defender Barry Fuller has been reflecting on his return to the club.
At the end of a week when he scored his first goal for the club at the Keepmoat Stadium in the 3-3 draw with Doncaster Rovers before a magnificent cross for the side’s final goal in the 4-0 Priestfield triumph over Bradford City, the former skipper has been talking about his return to the club.
After originally making his debut for the club in January 2008 and leading the Gills to Wembley Play Off glory in May 2009, his first spell at the club ended in July 2012 when Martin Allen didn’t renew his contract after Fuller suffered what proved to be a season ending injury against Hereford United the previous October.
“I had hope that after a good four years I may have been given something, but the manager at the time had other ideas and it was with a real heavy heart that I left the club and went to Barnet after making 150 appearances.”
After spending two years at Barnet, he joined AFC Wimbledon where he clocked up over 200 starts before being released at the end of last season.
Many Gills fans will probably admit that Fuller’s return to the club was one of the most unpredicted of Steve Lovell’s summer deals, but Fuller told us that to him it took hardly anytime at all to return to Priestfield.
“I was down after being released and at 33, I had to be realistic which is why the Gaffer’s phone call almost caught me by surprise. Anyhow, let’s just say that when we actually spoke about terms and a contract, the Gaffer didn’t get to the end of his first sentence before I agreed terms.”
Fuller now 34 seems to have really found a new lease of life back at the Medway Priestfield Stadium and after impressive recent performances, has found a way back too into the hearts of the Gills faithful in a similar way to the skipper of 2009.
