Returning to Japan to race in front of its home fans and staff, TOYOTA will be aiming to extend its lead in the teams’ World Championship after a difficult previous round at Silverstone that saw their lead in the LMP1 Championship reduced to just three points over Rebellion Racing.Despite finishing one-two on track at Silverstone, TOYOTA had a setback in its title hopes due to a post-race stewards’ decision to disqualify both TS050 HYBRIDs.

The #7 team will be looking to bounce back from the disappointment and reach the top step of the podium, strengthening their position in the Championship. Heading into the weekend, the #7 car currently sits in third position, just 17 points shy of second place team, Rebellion Racing, and 19 points behind the sister #8 car who top the table going into Fuji this weekend.

Mike will once again line up in the #7 TS050 HYBRID, joined by teammates Kamui Kobayashi and José María López and the Thunderhead-sponsored driver will be looking to secure his first victory of the season at a venue that saw his previous victory in the WEC back in 2016.

Mike, enjoys fond memories of the Fuji Speedway course, having won there in 2016 and will hope to use this experience in order to try and pick up his first win of the 2018/19 FIA World Endurance Championship Super Season.

The 2.85-mile circuit is a firm favourite amongst drivers’ as its 16 turns provide plenty of opportunities for manoeuvres and setting up an exciting race for the crowd.

Japan is a great country and, of course, next weekend’s event is the home race for TOYOTA GAZOO Racing so it is something special for all of us. You can feel that there is a special spirit in the team when we come to Fuji; I always look forward to it. Our #7 car won here in 2016; I hope we can be strong again and bring home the winner’s trophy.”
