Adrian Quaife-Hobbs struggled last weekend on his favourite race track in the latest round of the GP2 Championship.

Whilst the race results weren’t what Adrian would have wanted he did have the raw pace to show just what potential he has.

Qualifying, again did not go well for him and he had to start race one from 21st on the grid.Although Adrian has so much experience from this far back on the grid and Spa is a track where you can make overtaking moves work, with black skies looming at the start of race one all teams eyes were looking at the radar screens to see when the rain was due to fall.

After only a few laps the heavens opened and rain and hail forced the race to be red flagged, by this time Adrian had made his way up to 13th place.

The cars were held on the start line for 30 minutes, until the weather improved to restart the race. Adrian instantly put in some very quick laps and chose to pit for the mandatory change of tyres as late as possible. The timing screens showed Adrian could take fifth place, but the pit stop did not go according to plan and although four new treaded tyres were put on, they only last one lap and Adrian could not defend his position, finally finishing in 11th place.

Speaking after race one Adrian, said: “After the pit-stop I was only able to run one fast lap before a rapid tyre drop-off and I had the impression I had the wrong pressures, but we have to investigate the matter with our engineers to understand what happened.”

For Sundays sprint race, Adrian quickly found his way up to eighth place and whilst following the front pack through eau rouge he suffered a puncture, which damaged his front wing. Limping back to the pits for a new wing and tyres, placed Adrian back in 23rd position, which was extremely disappointing.

Once back out on track Adrian showed his true talent and speed and continually clocked the fastest lap over and over again, and once again was the quickest through eau rouge.

Reflecting on race two, he added: “It has been a frustrating weekend, with moments when we had great performance and issues that conditioned the results. I hope for a more successful weekend at Monza and hopefully repeat last year’s win”

The next round of the GP2 Championship will be held at Monza, Italy over the weekend of the 6/7 September, 2014
