Former Gillingham defender Ryan Bertrand has been named in the full England squad to play Italy in a friendly in Switzerland next week.
The 23 year old left for Chelsea in the summer of 2005 after coming through the youth set up at Priestfield and subsequently the former Robert Napier pupil had a fee of £125,000 paid by the Premier League club for his services after a tribunal had to agree the sum.
Bertrand has recently been playing for Team GB in the Olympics and his call up into the full England squad is reward for a fine past twelve months.
The defender played in last season’s Champions League Final and has been capped for England at various youth levels including the Under 21’s.
Gillingham will benefit to the tune of £100,000 for every ten appearances he makes for Chelsea up to forty appearances ( £400,000) and will benefit to the tune of £200,000 if he is capped by his country.
England Manager Roy Hodgson has named his 22 man squad for next week’s match in Berne and has selected a young group of players to travel to Switzerland.
There are first-time Senior call-ups for Tottenham Hotspur pair Steven Caulker and Jake Livermore and Chelsea’s Ryan Bertrand, whilst Manchester United’s Michael Carrick receives his first call-up since 2010 and he is joined by Old Trafford team-mate Tom Cleverley.
Aside from that, Norwich City goalkeeper John Ruddy will have another opportunity to impress after an unfortunate injury ruled him out of the summer’s European Championship Finals and Birmingham City’s Jack Butland will be hoping to pick up his first Senior cap after impressing for Team GB during the Olympics.
The squad will meet up on Sunday evening and travel to Switzerland on Tuesday ahead of the match at the Stade de Suisse on Wednesday evening.
