The popular Jose Riga has been confirmed as Blackpool’s new manager. The 56-year-old Belgian has penned a one-year rolling contract.
Riga will get a warm welcome when he returns to The Valley, after turning Charlton’s fortunes around last season.
Riga replaced Chris Powell after the Addicks poor showing against Sheffield United in the FA Cup quarter-final match at Bramall Lane.
Charlton were languishing at the bottom of the table at the time – albeit with games in hand – and had taken 27 points from 30 games.
In Riga’s 16 games in charge, the Addicks won 7, drew 3 and lost 6, gaining 24 points to finish in 18th position.
Riga was keen to continue the job he had started at The Valley, and though he was described as a strong candidate, the club appointed Bob Peeters instead.
Riga had this to say after being unveiled at Bloomfield Road on Wednesday:
“I had a good discussion with the chairman and we found an agreement. I’m ready for the big challenge.
“With the support of the chairman and certainly the support of the fans, who really must be our 12th man,I’m sure we can succeed.”
Riga is believed to have indicated to Blackpool chairman, Karl Oyston, a number of players he wants to bring in.
With the lack of incoming players at The Valley so far this summer, Charlton fans will be keen to find out the names on Riga’s list.
