Folkestone Invicta v Sevenoaks Town – Preview

Tomorrow evening’s First Round Kent Senior Cup tie against Bostik League newcomers Sevenoaks Town gives Invicta boss Neil Cugley an excellent opportunity to get some more game-time into several of his now numerically bigger – and certainly arguably stronger – squad.

Ian Draycott, Kane Rowland and Alfie Paxman look likely to start against the side from Wildernesse Park while defender Josh Vincent may also be involved following several weeks out through injury.

“When we can rest a few like this it does start to show people how strong our squad is now” said Neil, understandably in good spirits after his side’s first ever win at Wingate & Finchley on Saturday.

“Yes, we played really well up there – of course it helped when they went down to ten men, but it was a header from Johan that bounced up and hit the defender’s hand – there was nothing he could do about it, but an obvious penalty – only for Ade to scuff his shot.

“But he showed great character to bounce back so quickly to give us that second goal which was always going to be very important in deciding the outcome of the match.

“We looked so dangerous and it must have been exciting to watch. Geoff Shreeves (of Sky TV) was really impressed. I know Martin Tiler quite well and they are both lovely blokes who don’t only take an interest in the Premiership – I know that Martin is involved at Woking on a fairly regular basis.

“It was nice to meet Geoff. Wingate have tidied up their ground quite a bit and the pitch is always good up there, which suits the way we play. But our pitch is in great condition too and we have the guys from The Thrill Hills to thank for that.

“Towsey (former groundsman Gary Towse) worked so hard to get that right and it’s great that they have taken over to keep it such a good condition.”

Invicta reached the Kent Cup Final last season as most supporters will recall, only losing on penalties to National League Maidstone United after the match ended goalless with Folkestone giving every bit as good as they got from Jay Saunders’ men.

Sevenoaks include one or two players that Folkestone know reasonably well including well-travelled striker Frankie Sawyer who once grabbed a hat-trick for Hastings against Invicta in a Bank Holiday fixture at The Pilot Field some time ago.
