Folkestone Invicta v Greenwich Borough preview

Kent neighbours Gillingham have handed Invicta a boost ahead of tomorrow’s Emirates FA Cup tie against Greenwich Borough by clearing loan defender Finn O’Mara to play in all of Folkestone’s cup competitions while he is with the Bostik Premier club.

And the First Qualifying Round tie at the Fullicks Stadium will see manager Neil Cugley able to name his strongest squad so far this season.

Joe Taylor could be set to play a part for the first time since picking up an injury in mid-season and even long-term injury Ronnie Dolan took part in the training last night (Thursday).

Dolan is still due to have an operation on the ankle that was injured by a bad tackle in a game against Lowestoft last January but manager Cugley said: “Ronnie says his ankle feels much better and he’s still due for that operation in a few weeks’ time.

“So the ankle could be okay, but the rest of him needs a bit of work! He may though be in the squad, at least, for the Kent Senior Cup tie at Hythe on Tuesday.”

Neil added: “Everyone’s buzzing right now, and we just can’t wait for tomorrow’s cup tie. It should be a really good game.

“I’m really pleased with the squad we’ve got now. We’ve got quite a few young players trying to prove a point by showing they’re comfortable as this level.

“They’re responding well to what we’re asking them to do in training and they’ve already shown us that they can take some of that out on the pitch and into a game.

“Greenwich have invested in a fair bit of experience. They’re aiming to climb up through the leagues and they’ve got some quality players.

“We’ve had them watched, but I’ve no doubt they’ve watched us too – I’d be very surprised if they haven’t.”

Vastly experienced and well-travelled ex-Millwall and Brentford centre back Mark Phillips was sent off in Borough’s 3-0 win over Phoenix Sports on Monday, but as suspensions come into play after seven days, is eligible to play tomorrow, though not in any replay on Tuesday, if one was needed.

That Bank Holiday win made it six points out of six for Greenwich last weekend and took them up to ninth in the Bostik One South table after they had taken just one point from their first two league games of the season – a 1-1 home draw with unpredictable Whyteleafe and an only goal of the game defeat away to their nemesis side, Corinthian Casuals who also beat them in last season’s Division One play-off semi-final.

“This won’t be an easy game by any means” admitted the Folkestone manager.

“It should be a good chance to see what we are like when there’s something definite at stake.”

Prize money for tomorrow’s tie is £3000 to the winners.

The game is due to be featured as the Bostik League website’s match of the day which adds just a little more to the occasion.

“Our support has been absolutely brilliant this season” said boss Cugley.

“The players especially appreciated how the fans got behind them at Tonbridge on Monday. If the supporters match that tomorrow, let’s hope we can give them the result they deserve!”
