Even the most ardent Folkestone fans could not have expected Neil Cugley’s side to roar back to form in such decisive fashion as they romped to arguably their best win of the season and climbed four places up the Bostik Premier Division table.
Let’s be honest, Invicta had probably scooped up enough prize money in the FA Cup before last weekend’s defeat at Slough.
But with the return of Josh Vincent from suspension and Ian Draycott replacing the somewhat out of sorts Joe Taylor up front, Invicta took the lead with a terrific strike by wingback Kieron McCann on 26 minutes.
Deputising for the unavailable Tim Roberts, standby keeper Nick Shaw did absolutely nothing wrong as Sammy Moore’’s men tried to make a mark on the game.
Player boss Moore was ruled out through injury following the Tanners’ FA Cup win at Margate last weekend while danger man Jack Midson hardly had the most effective game of his long and distinguished career.
But Folkestone needed a second goal for comfort and it duly arrived when captain Callum Davies increased their lead from a corner on 66 minutes and the excellent Sam Hasler smashed a typical long range blast past hapless keeper Zaki Oualah to make victory even more secure with the home side’s third goal nine minutes from time.
After disappointing defeats in the league at both Merstham and Met Police and Invicta’s disappointing exit from the FA Cup last weekend, this was perhaps their most convincing performance and result of this season so far.
October has always looked a difficult for Cugley’s side, and still with away games at Leiston in both league and FA Trophy either side of a midweek visit to Tooting & Mitcham next Tuesday, October 24, Invicta’s next home is on October 31 when their visitors are Thurrock.
Home form can be so important, as long as the odd result can be picked up on road but this result – and especially in the style it was achieved – puts Invicta’s supporters in great heart to tackle the tough games to come.
Skipper Davies was named man of the match by sponsors Metroline Security with the excellent Ade Yousuff again outstanding and doing everything but scoring on the night.
Lovely stuff, and more of that please lads. The home crowd are always behind you at the Fullicks Stadium even if the loudest of the Noyzboise Boys sometimes have to go to work on matchdays.
Onwards and upwards though there are three more tough away fixtures before Folkestone are next at home to Thurrock on Halloween Tuesday, October 31.
