Invicta carried the form that last weekend that took them to the top of the Bostik Premier Division into Wednesday’s Kent Reliance Kent Cup semi-final and come from behind to beat Charlton’s young hopefuls thanks to a late second half goal by hardworking midfielder Kieron McCann.
The non-league side now deservedly progress to the county cup final against Maidstone United at venue to be decided on the toss of a coin between the two clubs involved.
Folkestone were understandably unchanged from the side that produced an excellent 3-0 victory at Harrow Borough and, typically, took the game to their opposition from the start.
It was against the run of play that the South London visitors went ahead on 23 minutes when the ball was played across from the left for attacking midfielder Albie Morgan to beat keeper Tim Roberts from just inside the 18 yard box giving the young Addicks the lead.
But Invicta continued to have the edge and got back on terms through the ultra-sharp Johan Ter Horst just before the 40 minute mark.
The home side came under pressure straight after the break, but thanks to their defence led by captain Callum Davies with keeper Tim Roberts doing everything that could have been asked for as the visitors tried to regain the lead.
But Folkestone always produced the better football and after Ade Yuseff headed against the bar, they eventually produced what proved the winning goal through McCann’s solid strike six minutes from the end of normal time.
The visiting side tried hard to force a penalty shoot-out but Invicta were good value for this victory and they can now look forward to the end of season showpiece against Kent rivals Maidstone.
County cup competitions can sometimes become a distraction from the real business of a football season and are not the be all and end all for most clubs. Defeat could have knocked the confidence of Cugley’s side who now face what looks a tougher than expected visit to in form Thurrock in the league this weekend.
Match sponsors Netbox Digital Ltd chose Josh Vincent their man of the match on a night when it was hard to spot anyone of the home side not playing up to the occasion.
A yellow card at Harrow means that the admirable defender misses the next three games, and the only other downbeat note came when the ever lively Johan Ter Horst failed to appear for the second half with an apparent recurrence of a groin injury.
