Former Gillingham midfielder Michael Flynn has told KSN he would have loved to have made a return to the club in the coaching set up.

Michael Flynn

The 34 year old had a spell at Priestfield between 2005 and 2007, going on to become a real fans favourite and captaining the side.

Spells with Blackpool, Huddersfield Town and Bradford City then followed before joining Newport County in 2012 where he has been since and is now the Academy Manager of the Welsh side.

Flynn’s name was just one of those linked with the Assistant Manager’s position at Gillingham after Andy Hessenthaler left last week, but David Kerslake was appointed as Justin Edinburgh’s number two on Monday with Wayne Hatswell having joined the club as Under 18s coach.

Having been linked with the Assistant Manager’s position at Gillingham, Flynn admitted to KSN he was flattered to have seen his name associated with the job:

“I didn’t apply and I must admit I didn’t know there was a process that was ongoing, although it was something I would have been interested in.”

“Justin is someone I have got a lot of time and respect for and when he left Newport, I was glad he got the job at Gillingham as I like to see my old sides do well.”

“I’m sure Justin will bring some good times to Gillingham, just like he did at Newport.”

“Coaching is the next step for me and I’m looking forward to it being the next stage of my career.”

“I have been doing my badges and I haven’t been lucky enough to earn enough money from playing to retire just yet!”

Despite living back in his home town of Newport once again with the family, Flynn admitted he would more than happily relocate to Kent if ever a job were to come up at a club like Gillingham:

“My partner is very supportive and if ever the situation arose, she would come with me.”

“That makes decisions easier and I have got the support of my family.”

Despite not having applied for the Gillingham jobs, Flynn revealed he is in regular contact with Justin Edinburgh:

“I spoke to him just before he went away on his family holiday and we text each other a fair bit, but if he had wanted to have brought me to the club, we would have spoken about that.”

“Justin knows what he wants and he has got good coaches there. Wayne Hatswell is a very good coach and he will compliment the likes of Steve Lovell and Mark Patterson.”

“If Justin ever asked me to join the coaching set up, I would jump at the chance.”

Another man to have joined the backroom staff is former goalkeeper Jason Brown and Flynn is delighted his friend is back at the club as goalkeeping coach:

“I spoke to Jason when he went for the job and it’s brilliant for him and the club as he is very hard working.”

“He has had a very, very good career and I was with him at the time at Gillingham and when he left. I know he didn’t want to go and there was a bit of uncertainty when he left, but he got the call from Blackburn which was a great move for him and set him on his way in his career.”

“I know how much he loves the club, so I think it is a win, win situation.”

“You can never have enough people at a club that care as much as the fans. They are a great set of supporters. They’re very passionate fans at Gillingham and that’s why I enjoyed my time as much as I did there.”
