Gillingham returned from the end of the Golden Mile with a point that takes the club top of League Two for the first time in the Mark Bonner era.
The Gills made the long trip to the Northwest at the start of the Bank Holiday weekend and came home from Highbury Stadium Fleetwood with a point that took them top of League Two in these early days of the season.
What will please the manager more however are the four points that he has seen his new charges return from the North-West on the last two Saturdays and come home still unbeaten.
Mackenzie Hunt twice and Tommy Lonergan both had chances that did not test Jake Turner before eight minutes from the break Lonergan thought he had given the home side the lead side footing home as an assistant’s flag fluttered.
On the stroke of half time, Gillingham were a coat of paint away from taking the lead, Jayden Clarke worked very hard and was rewarded as he took advantage of a mistake and raced through rolling the ball past keeper David Harrington who was a very relieved man to see Clarke’s effort scrape the foot of the post.
Lonergan fired into Turner’s chest early in the second half and moments later, Mipo Odubeko shot deflected and looped over Turner’s crossbar.
Harrington pulled off an exceptionally fine save from Gills sub-Aaron Rowe’s curling low shot and was thankful to see the rebound from Remeao Hutton flash across the face of goal with no yellow Gillingham shirt able to apply the last touch.
George Lapslie was a fraction away from being the match winner on successive Saturdays as he poked a dropping ball inches wide and as the game entered stoppage time, Turner secured a successive clean sheet with a brave save to deny Ryan Bloom.
Honours even and a point each just about right!
