Resurgent Welling United side finished Havant and Waterlooville’s faint play-off hopes in a dominant display as they ended the season with a win leaving boss Warren Feeney pleased to end on a high.

That left Warren Feeney to reflect on the campaign. “It’s pleasing to finish the season strongly, which I think we have, and I said to the players in there we’re a match for anyone on our day and it’s just the consistency of it.” he said.

“They’re an honest group and they’ve come here to get a good result against a very good team and it’s pleasing to come away with a win.”

Aldershot loanee Kodi Foster-Lyons opened the scoring and Feeney was delighted with his overall contribution since joining the club.

“Kodi’s been different class since he’s come in. He’s steady, he’s a good athlete, he’s a good pro and he does that in training all the time. He did say that he was going to score today and it’s funny because he didn’t arrive until twenty past two today because of the motorway and he can come late for any game when he puts in a performance like that.” joked Feeney.

The scoreline could have been a lot heavier in Welling’s favour. “To be fair, in the first half it could have been a lot more if we’d been a bit more clinical but there’s confidence there. Antony Papadopoulos has been different class at right back. He’s a good kid and he wants to learn and he’s not put a foot wrong. He’s very composed and plays great balls forward.”

Although Manny Parry played in this game at centre back, his return to the team as a holding midfielder has allowed James Dunne to have a lot more impact in forward areas and that has been key to Welling’s late season improvement.

Feeney added: “Dunny’s got that wee bit more energy to go forward. Manny’s an honest boy and I’m really pleased with the way they’ve adapted.”

A lack of stability in the squad over recent years has made his first full season with the Wings a challenge. He confirmed: “You’re bringing in new players, look at the turnover of players and what happens through the season, and you probably see it now and want the season to go on but we’ll go away and reassess and see what way we’re going to go forward.”

There will be some changes to the squad in areas that can be improved, but the won’t be wholesale.

Feeney confirmed: “There’s no point in getting rid of players and bringing in new ones for the sake of it. We need stability. You look at the ones that can help us but there’s going to be players who came and go. We’ve got players that we want to bring in and we’ll see what happens.”
