Kodi Lyons-Foster’s first goal for Welling United rescued a point from their game with Chippenham Town. Although they avoided defeat, Welling manager Warren Feeney felt that his team could have done better.
He said: “We’re very frustrated to be honest. The players, if you see their faces in the changing room, they’re all disappointed.
“At times, I didn’t think we got going today but we didn’t lose the game. They’re fighting for their lives down there, Chippenham. They’ve had decent draws with Hemel, Ebbsfleet. We knew it was a difficult game.
“We had a couple of chances in the first half.” he continued. “If they go in it makes it a little bit more comfortable for us. Payney’s one hits the post and one fizzed across the front. Then (in the) second half Ade probably hit it too well but we gave a sloppy goal away. We didn’t react to the rebound off (goalkeeper) Myles (Roberts) but the positive was that we didn’t get beaten.”
Despite Chippenham’s lowly position in the table, they were good enough to reach the second round of the F.A. Cup, defeating Lincoln City on the way.
They took a point from Ebbsfleet United despite playing with ten men recently so they were never going to be a pushover.
Feeney continued: “People just think that you’re going to just turn up and beat teams like this. No disrespect, they were in the play-offs last year. They’ve got great coaching staff. There’s no easy games in this league.”
Feeney was disappointed that Welling weren’t awarded a penalty early in the second half.
“It was a definite shove.” he said. “Why would you go down? Payney (Stefan Payne) should be running away celebrating there. He got himself in front of the centre back and as he’s jumped up the boy’s been cute. He’s nudged him. The linesman said ‘I couldn’t see it from where I am’ I think everyone else could.”
He was also displeased with a booking for Amadou Kassarate in the first half.
“I feel a bit sorry for Ama as well. He picked up a yellow card for a great tackle. He won the ball. It just frustrates me as that’s another yellow card for the kid and that’s the disappointing thing.
“I thought that they were picking on him a bit today. He was worried that he was going to get a red and that’s part of why we brought him off.”
It was the second similar yellow card for Kassarate in two games. Feeney continued: “For me it wasn’t a second yellow the other night (against Braintree Town). These things happen in football. You’ve got to accept it. You can’t appeal a second yellow. It’s a ridiculous rule to be honest when you see something like that there but we’ve got to accept it and move on.”
Taylor Maloney and Taylor Curran were both missing through injury. Feeney said: “We’ve had a couple of the boys with niggles, we’ve had a couple with the flu who have come in off their sick bed but fingers crossed we’ll have the majority if not all of them available on Tuesday.”
