Tough games have come thick and fast for Welling, and there can be few tougher than visiting the New Shay in which FC Halifax were so strong last season.
Coming into this match, Halifax had recorded six points out of six while Welling had won just the one.
Their travelling supporters knew that it was going to be hard but would probably have expected a little more from their team.
Danger from crosses became apparent early on when Loui Fazakerley cleared Lois Maynard’s header off the line.
Steve Williams then headed against the post from Marc Roberts’ long throw.
Scott Boden had a header tipped over by Lee Butcher and Maynard shot just beyond the post.
Maynard missed another opportunity when heading wide from another Roberts long throw and Boden had an effort deflected just wide having received a clever pass from Adam Smith.
Harry Beautyman fired over for Welling just before the break but two substitutions at half time helped the hosts to push home their advantage.
Jamie Jackson looked lively immediately and won yet another corner, and once again Welling were caught lacking when defending a set piece.
Marshall slung in another corner and Roberts rose unopposed to head home.
Just four minutes later, Halifax doubled their lead when Boden collected a pass and laid it off for the other substitute, Richard Peniket to fire across Butcher and into the bottom corner.
Tyrone Marsh had a shot well saved by Matt Glennon and then almost managed to play Afolabi Obafemi in but it was a short respite.
Once again Maynard shot wide then a defensive header came back off Butcher’s far post.
Halifax continued to press and Boden headed over before they added again with 14 minutes remaining.
Not surprisingly, a corner undid the Wings when Marshall’s delivery was headed back across the face of goal for Peniket to finish.
There was still time for Jackson to chip onto the bar and for Charlie Gorman to head off the line from a Roberts header as he met yet another dead ball delivery unopposed.
