Despite goals from Brendon Cass and Jack Harris, promotion chasing Faversham Town lost their unbeaten run lasting from January after they were beaten by a strong Corinthian Casuals team at the Shepherd Neame Stadium.
The lilywhites came into the game with two changes from their 1-0 away win at Chipstead the previous week, Aaron Lacy came into the team instead of Ollie Bankole and Brendon Cass came into the team to replace Jack Harris.
The visitors kicked off and within a minute they had their first opportunity, after a long ball over the defence from Ross Defoe, Jamie Byatt was able to reach the ball before it went out of play, but after twisting and turning to get away from his marker the best he could do was put a weak shot into the hands of Simon Overland.
Soon after Faversham should have gone ahead, but as Brendon Cass brought the ball back into the path of his striking partner, Luke Harvey took too much time and the ball was gathered up by the goalkeeper.
After a slow period of play, it was Faversham who took the lead in the 29th minute. Aaron Lacy crossed the ball in from a corner towards the head of Matthew Bourne at the far post, the centre back was able to head the ball back across the goalmouth before an unmarked Brendon Cass was able to slip the ball into the bottom corner to give Town the lead.
However, desperate for points on their search for survival, Corinthian came straight back and scored on their next major opportunity, after Ross Defoe’s corner fell towards a group of players in the six yard box, it was Danny Dudley who jumped highest to convert from the set piece.
Minutes after the turnaround was complete for the visitors after a long pass down the right wing from defence, Juevan Spencer controlled the ball well, before cutting inside and carefully placing the ball past Overland.
With seconds to go before half time Faversham had a chance to level the game before half time, but after Cass was fouled on the edge of the area, but David Botterill’s curling effort was expertly saved by Danny Bracken.
After a very slow start to the second half it was Faversham who had the first good opportunity to score, but after Cass was tackled, the ball fell to Aden Sherlock who powered his long shot past the left post.
The hosts were punished for their failure to convert their shots in the 66th minute when, against the odds, Casuals scored again. The whites had failed to deal with a corner in the first half and they were forced to watch the ball fly into their goal again after Joe Hicks was able to score from Ellis Wilson-Joseph’s corner.
Immediately after the fourth goal of the game, Faversham manager Ray Turner used two of his three substitutions as his team continued to look for a way to break down the strong Corinthian defence.
It looked as though Turner’s decisions may have been making the difference as almost directly after the host’s team were shuffled around they got a goal back, Renford Tenyue was given too much time and space on the left wing, after beating his man he was able to continue his run into the penalty area, forcing the goalkeeper to commit himself, Tenyue was able to see Jack Harris alone in the six yard box and after a simple pass across the goalmouth the 19 year old on loan striker was able to convert, leaving the hosts with just one goal to score in order to remain unbeaten.
Moments after, they thought that the comeback was on, but after Brendon Cass was able to control a high pass and volley it into the net, the sixth goal of the game was disallowed after the assistant referee saw Cass in an offside position. In the five additional minutes Faversham continued to pressure their opponents, but after attempts from Botterill, Cass, Harvey and Marsden the referee blew the final whistle to end the game.
Faversham stay in 6th after that result, but after Burgess Hill Town lost to the league leaders, their place is still not in danger. They will make the short journey to the coast next week to play in form Folkestone Invicta.
