Faversham Town caused an upset by beating Premier Division side Leatherhead and by doing so reach the FA Trophy 1st Round for the first time in their history, this was a well deserved victory albeit a hard one.
Faversham came out of the blocks the quickest as in the 3rd minute a Eddie Allsopp free kick was fumbled by Myles Bowman but collected at the second attempt then 6 minutes later a long clearance by Luke Watkins found Manny Oluwasemo who controlled it & saw his shot pushed away by Bowman.
Leatherhead suddenly woke up & started to get control of the game & in the 13th minute Alex Sami 20 yards out turned & shot but it was deflected just past the post, two minutes later Sami was put through on goal & Watkins rushing out got fingertips to the shot & it went for a corner.
In the 23rd minute a ball to the far post found Sami & his shot was saved by Watkins. Another half chance came in the 38th minute when a Leatherhead corner was cleared but only to Sami who from 15 yards volleyed over the bar.
Half time arrived & both teams were still in it.
The second half started with Leatherhead on the front foot when in the 47th minute Darnell Gother-Braithwaite saw his 20 yard volley go past the post.
Three minutes later & Leatherhead nearly took the lead when that man Sami 8 yards out under pressure saw his shot come back of the crossbar.
In the 55th minute Faversham took the lead when Sam Bewick received the ball on the edge of the area & he let it go to his right before shooting past Bowman, now could they stay in front.
Leatherhead were now trying to get back into the game & in the 60th minute a ball across the area found substitute Craig McGee & his 20 yard shot went over the bar.
Leatherhead got the equalizer in the 72nd minute when skipper Ryan Huckle crossed to the back post where Isacc Ogundere was & his powerful header beat Watkins game on.
The game now ebbed & flowed & in the 86th minute Dean Grant saw his 20 yard effort deflected away for a corner, in the very next minute the corner was flicked on at the near post & Oluwasemo stabbed in from 5 yards.
The referee indicated 7 minutes of added on time & Leatherhead tried their best to get an equalizer but Faversham held firm & now look forward to Monday’s draw.
