Faversham Town secured a very important win with a stunning late goal which was very much deserved at Shepherd Neame Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
The game kicked off with high intensity as Danny Walder drove through the midfield and rattled the post with a long-ranged effort inside the first minute.
The high tempo football continued from Faversham early on in the first half with captain Harry Goodger failing to convert a great chance one-on-one with the keeper from a defence splitting pass from George Monger.
Faversham Town controlled the ball for the majority of the first half with the ball forced out to the tricky wingers of Faversham, Ashley Miller and Renford Tenyue, who created endless opportunities that were not converted. However, Guernsey showed signs of promise with a couple good counter attacks that struck the bar and sent wide.
The first half ended surprisingly goalless.
The second half kicked off and both teams came out all guns blazing with constant end to end football.
Deservingly, Faversham took the lead five minutes into the second half with Renford Tenyue bursting down the line and crossing a perfectly weighted ball onto the head of Harry Doodger for a calm header across goal.
After the goal, Guernsey took control of the game and an instant reply from Guernsey’s left back Thomas Dodd as he smashed a volley top right on the bounce from a perfect lob pass from Frank Tobin.
Guernsey pushed forward again, continuing their positive response to the first goal, as Glyn Dyer powered a shot forcing a spectacular save from Will Godmon pushed onto the post.
Substitute Michael Jenner makes an instant introduction and hit a powerful shot from the edge of the box, but saved by Callum Stanton, and as the game looked like the score will not be altered, in the final minutes, Renford Tenyue sent in another great cross from the right side of the pitch, which is headed on powerfully by the substitute Luke Harvey directed straight in the bottom left of the net giving no chance for the keeper.
Faversham closed out the win taking all three points heading in to Tuesday’s Cup game against Bromley.
Faversham caretaker manager Clive Walker commented on the winning goal saying “it’s a great moment for him (Luke Harvey) coming back from an injury.”
However, this win does not alter Walker’s position as manager as he stated: “I’m here to help the club, we are in need of a manager as soon as possible”
