After the game Turner admitted, “It was a really frustrating day for me on the sidelines. In the first half anytime that we wanted to we were able to up the tempo. What’s come back to haunt us is that we haven’t put the game away before the hour mark given the chances that we created.”
“I’m really disappointed in the goal that we’ve conceded don’t get me wrong, but it’s absolutely vital when you’re in charge of games and when you’re in charge of the tempo of the match, it’s so vital that you push on and take full advantage getting a two or three goal lead and that’s what we should have done by half time.”
“I think we played some good stuff first half and that’s the disappointing thing as we overplayed it too much – took the extra touch – and that wasn’t us.”
“The final ball wasn’t there and that was the worry for me; coming in at only one nil in terms of us maintaining thing; possibly changing things or them coming at us, but I think it was more a case of us dying off a touch as we started making mistakes.”
“I still felt that we were relatively in charge but it was relatively open to one chance or one mistake and that’s exactly what happened, and from that moment onwards the game could have gone either way as in actual fact we were possibly fortunate to get a point in the end if you analyse things objectively.”
“We weren’t creating the chances that we should have been and it was Casuals who were looking slightly stronger.”
“It hurts today; it really sticks in the stomach! I’ve got to be honest, but I don’t think that they were the greatest opposition – they were a strong side which they took full advantage of it. We should have pushed on and got another three points today to keep the gap between us and the leaders to five points.”
“The ruthlessness just wasn’t there today and that’s what I think really sticks in the my throat a bit tonight!”
The game’s first goalmouth action saw the home side take the lead. A corner wasn’t cleared properly and as Wayne Wilson powered the ball back into the Casuals area only for Kieran Oliver to steer the ball past the wrong footed Danny Bracken in the Casuals goal.
Casuals response was almost instant as from their first corner, Danny Dudley powered in a header that extended Simon Overland into a stunning save away to his right.
The home side then had loud penalty shouts waved away by the increasingly fussy Mr Bentley as Wilson’s free kick was flicked on by John Scarborough and it appeared to come off the arm of a Casuals defender as it was about to fall to Oliver. Mr Bentley though wasn’t interested.
Kim Grant almost put the home side back in front before half time firing across the face of goal, but then went even closer seconds after the break when Bracken produced a wonderful block to deny him. As the ball ran free, George Monger was following up and he snatched at his shot sending it sailing over the bar and into the car park, and it was as though as the ball vanished out of the ground so went the home side’s resolve for the next 15 minutes or so.
On 63 minutes came the equaliser that Turner feared as Mahrez Battache prodded the ball through for Hodges to ram the ball through Overland and into the net.
Juevan Spencer was then denied by a fantastic Aiden Sherlock block in the visitors next attack, before a stretching Scarborough was relieved to see his clearance fly straight into Overland’s arms.
The home side forced a series of corners late on with Grant at the heart of most good things but they just could find their way through a very resolute Corinthian Casuals defence, and so a share of the spoils was probably just about right.
