Faversham Town 1-0 Cray Wanderers

Faversham carry on the road to Wembley with £3000 in prize money but what a scrap it was against Cray who only last week beat them 1-0 in the league.Faversham3

The game started with Faversham coming out of the traps the quickest when in the 4th minute Sam Bewick’s first time cross into the area saw Luke Harvey 10 yards out head just wide of the post.

Cray started to get into the game and in the 15th minute the ball sent out to the right wing found Danny Haynes who laid the ball into the path of Karl Dent but under pressure his shot from 18 yards went wide.

In a counter attack Renford Tenyue ran down the left wing went into the area beat the defender and from an acute angle his shot was saved by Nick Blue. The game went quiet for a while with Cray dominating possession but not really creating anything, then in the 36th minute Kieron Campbell received the ball centrally from Harvey & tried his luck from 25 yards forcing Blue to push it away for a corner.

The last half chance of the half came in the 39th minute when Campbell from 25 yards out ran into the area beating three defenders but saw his shot deflected for a corner. Half time arrived & both managers would have been happy but would want a little bit more from their respective teams.

In the 53rd minute came the talking point as Grant Basey received the ball from Dent and ran forward towards the penalty area where Ryan Cooper seemed to foul him just inside the box but the referee gave it 1” outside the box to the amazement of most of the supporters on that side of the pitch, even a qualified referee just watching stated afterwards he thought it was in the area, the resulting free kick did not cause any trouble to Faversham.

Seven minutes later they rubbed salt into the wound when they scored, a free kick was given close to the corner flag on the left hand side & Campbell curled it in avoiding everyone & hit the back of the net.

Cray felt everything was against them but credit to them as they tried to get back into the game, in the 73rd minute Lee Prescott who was only playing from the start as Solomon Taiwo was injured in the warm up went across the 18 yard box before shooting but it went to Taylor McDonagh who from 10 yards saw his snap shop superbly tipped over the bar by Will Godmon. Cray nearly conceded a second when a long ball forward saw Jay Leader let it bounce & leave it for the onrushing Blue who was beaten to it by Bewick & the ball went wide and Bewick chasing it shot into the side netting.

Three minutes later a Josh Stanford free kick curled around the wall and just went past the post. In the 82nd minute Sean Roberts passed inside to Max Williams who went into the area and put Brandon Scott in & his shot went across the goal evading everyone and just going wide of the post and then in the 85th minute Williams played McDonagh in and his cross went just over the bar. Faversham were nearly over the line but then 5 minutes of added time came up and they just survived & now wait for the draw on Monday.
