Faversham Town edged a further point clear at the top of the SCEFL Premier as Fisher missed a chance to go top themselves in a fascinating battle as the temperature plummeted at a frozen Aquatherm stadium.
The only contest to survive the freeze in the division ended in a deserved stalemate as neither side deserved to lose given the effort and endeavour shown by both sets of players.
The game had barely begun when Fisher was presented with a golden chance courtesy of Faversham keeper Jacob Russell – the keepers wayward pass went straight to Fisher’s Kesna Clarke who returned the ball first time from forty yards only to see the effort drift past the left post much to the relief of Russell.
The home side’s first chance of note was a diving header from Tashi-Jay Kwayie but the divisions leading marksman saw his effort – from Bradle Simms’ cross – flash narrowly wide. The home side central defensive pair then both had headers from Sam Hasler corner go close but both Ben Gorham and Callum Davies will be disappointed not to have hit the target.
Hasler himself then went close with a low drive as the home side appeared to be on top as Fisher failed to create too much threat after that early chance from Clarke.
Yet as the first half approached its final stages, Fisher came to life with Jake Lovell being denied by a brave save from Russell and Clarke threatening to get on the end of a couple of really teasing centres.
Kwayie was unlucky in first half stoppage time when Fisher keeper Isaac Ogunseri fumbled Hasler’s shot for possibly the only time in the game, and as the ball ran loose for Kwayie, the keeper recovered really well and with the help of Don Macaulay managed to deny the Faversham man his twentieth goal of the season.
As the sun disappeared into the second half and the temperature dropped still further, the game became more and more stretched without either side really finding that killer final ball.
Hasler had a free kick that forced Ogunseri into a really good low save to his left which the Fisher goal survived a massive scramble from a corner with boots flying in every direction except for that of the ball.
Fisher continued to probe when they went forward and sent over two or three really testing balls that Russell and his back line just about survived. In stoppage time, the visitors had a golden opportunity to take the points but Lovell fired over and the chance was gone.
Honours even leaves Faversham two points clear of both second placed VCD Athletic (whose FA Vase game was frozen off) and Fisher – Faversham have played a game less than VCD and four less than the Fish – with Tommy Warrilow’s side due to visit VCD in a fortnights time!
