Farmer excited about Gills season

Gillingham Ladies captain Danni Farmer has told KSN how this season could be a big one for the club and she’s excited for it to start.

The Gills Ladies start their league campaign away at QPR on Sunday afternoon with Farmer in charge of the side on the pitch and the PE teacher told us how she wasn’t that nervous about the forthcoming campaign:

“The start of the season is always a big thing for me as it is everyone that plays football. The break is always nice, but ultimately playing is what I love doing. As the season approaches, I dont really feel nervous, I just get really excited.”

“At the start of last season I was not captain and now I am its just made me want it even more. I actually can not wait to get underway and fingers crossed we can nick 3 points.”

Pre-season preparations have been hampered this summer with a number of players picking up knocks and Farmer is no exception as she was forced off in last weekend’s game at home to Charlton, but she feels that she’ll be ready to face QPR:

“Yes unfortunately I rolled my ankle against Charlton last week, which was disappointing especially as it was in the first 10 minutes against my old team, but even more so that it was the week before the season.”

“I have been resting and icing it all week and it seems to be ok so fingers crossed I will come through the game. It will be strapped up like a good’un!”

This season sees a change of home grounds for the Gills Ladies with them playing at Chatham Town Football Club and Farmer admitted the facilities at the Ryman League club had impressed the side:

“Everyone is looking forward to playing at Chatham and to be honest it already feels like home. The pitch is massive which will be something to get used to, but the surface is brilliant and really suits the style we play.”

“The Gaffer has set a rule saying that we must stay after games for at least 30 minutes, and with the bar right near the gate we can make sure no one escapes; so will be brilliant to get everyone together after games.”

Promotion has to be the target for any side embarking on a new campaign, but Farmer told KSN how the squad hadn’t even thought about that yet:

“We have not really spoken about targets this season. It is a difficult one because at the start of last season there was a lot of talk about us achieving another promotion and I think our early performances warranted that, however for all our positive play we just didnt pick up any points.”

“It was so frustrating because we knew what we were capable of, but it just didnt happen. With that experience behind us now I think we are going to approach games as they come, and not look too far in front.”

“We know if we put a run together in this league we will be there or there abouts, but we also know that it is going to be an absolute scrap for points.”

Team spirit is crucial to any side, but it’s obvious to anyone that goes and watches the Gills Ladies that they have that in abundance and Farmer admits that is one of the reason so many players want to come and play for the club:

“All the girls at Gills are great, and we always have a laugh. We signed so many players at the beginning of last season and as expected it took some time to gel, but towards the end we really bonded as a group and this has continued this season.”

“We are now a team that want to fight for one another and I have no doubt that this will show in our games.”
