Evina waiting for Addicks chance
Evina waiting for Addicks chance

Cedric Evina is 21-years-old, came through the Arsenal academy, captaining their Under-18 team and has played 30 games in the Football League.

Matthew Briggs is also 21, and has played 12 Football League games when he has been loaned out by Fulham.

Chris Powell told Evina last season that he needed to be patient and wait for his chance, due to the outstanding form of Bradley Wiggins. Patient he was but since Wiggins’ injury the manager has opted to play Chris Solly at left-back and bring Lawrie Wilson in on the right. It was reported at the end of last week that the Addicks had enquired about Briggs and today the Daily Star are reporting that the Fulham youngster is set to sign on for a month’s loan at The Valley.

The last two matches have not produced many overlapping runs by the full-backs which has probably prompted the manager to look at the loan market. The question is, why is Powell not prepred to play Evina? The player’s frustration is clear as his injudicious Tweet on Friday proved.

It is possible Powell has not even seen Briggs play, certainly, given his work load, he can not be very well acquainted with Briggs’ talents. Is this not an ideal opportunity for Evina to prove his worth?

Alan Pardew once explained to me how unpopular short term loan players are at clubs, team spirit is a huge factor in successful teams and a short term recruits can upset the applecart.

Evina must now be questioning his future at The Valley. He has waited patiently in the wings and when the opportunity arose, he has still not been given a chance.

Perhaps Evina is not Championship quality but if he is not given a chance how will we know? One thing is certain, had he played in the last two games, the Addicks would have been a better balanced outfit.

With finances being tight at The Valley, bringing a loanee left-back in looks a needless expenditure.
