Gillingham manager Steve Evans was rightly proud of his side after they claimed their first three points of the season at the weekend.
Having had a disrupted pre-season and injuries to start the season, Evans side showed resilience at home to Morecambe at the weekend to take the victory.
Mustapha Carayol had given the home side an early lead with a shot from distance that gave the keeper no chance, from a well worked free-kick routine.
They were pegged back when a mistake from the Gills keeper Jamie Cumming saw Morecambe equalise before Vadine Oliver stepped up and slotted home the winner from the penalty spot in the second half.
Speaking to the Gillingham official website after the game, Evans said: “I thought it was a fantastic performance, I think we passed it better than we have done, at any stage of the season. We moved them around.
“We got a great start from the player that was the best player on the pitch today by some distance, Muzza Carayol. It was a fantastic strike, he done that a few times in training yesterday so we opened it up to him and he took advantage.
“I think then there is three or four errors that allows them to score a goal. You know we give it away cheap, and it was a cross from the edge of the box, and I think Jamie admits he should do better with it.
“We came in at half time and I love a kid that just goes my responsibility sorry guys, I love it because there is nothing more that you can add to that other than show me a mature performance second half.”
After that the Gills were on the offence and looking for the winning goal and it came in the end from last season’s top scorer, who got his account underway for the new season.
“We then got the penalty and it is firstly a penalty I think on Max, it then breaks to Lloydy and he goes past somebody and he is wacked down. Great penalty by V, and the credit that I will then give my players is they then never let Morecambe have a chance.”
