After pulling off one of the comebacks of Round One, Steve Evans’ Gillingham side now know that their potential path to another possible meeting with a Premier League side in the FA Cup.
In Monday night’s draw for the Second Round of the Emirates FA Cup, the Gills were handed a home tie with League Two Exeter City with the tie to be played at Priestfield on Saturday 28th November.
Regular opponents for the Gills down the years, it seems incredible that the tie will be the first time that the Devon side has visited Priestfield for eight seasons when they won 3-2 on their last visit courtesy of a late goal from Jamie Cureton – Gills goals that day for the record from Chris Whelpdale and Danny Jackman.
That though was the first time that Exeter had taken the three points back to Devon with them since September 1981 when they ironically won by the same score line. In between times, the Gills won five of the seven meetings with four clean sheets…
Evans told KSN, “It’s a winnable tie. We will need to respect a top-quality side in Exeter – they’ve some good players and a good manager!”
