Evans looks ahead to Peterborough
Evans looks ahead to Peterborough

After getting agonisingly close to producing a FA Cup upset last weekend, the Gills return to League action today as manager Steve Evans takes his charges to face the side where his family live.

Peterborough United currently sit in the final play off place just three points ahead of the Gills. The game is another massive game for Evans and his squad coming on the back of their FA Cup showdown.

Evans told us, “On reflection it was a huge, huge performance from our players and a huge performance from the people of Gillingham, of Medway and of Kent – to come and support us and create, not in my words but in the words of David Moyes “A great atmosphere!”

“If you were at a Premier League game and you got that atmosphere in front of 50,000, you’d be thinking great but now that’s over we must move on and search for league points.

“We’re in a good place at the moment and we need to continue that starting at Posh (Peterborough United) on Saturday and then against Oxford the following Saturday.”

The transfer window is of course open now and Evans said. “Everyone knew what my targets were right at the start of the season – I don’t hide behind what some other managers do – I know that some people don’t like managers who at the start hide in the trees and l do say what they’re doing.

“Looking at Saturday’s trip, we go there only three points off the play off places. We’ve lost in the FA Cup with a very spirited and competent performance against a Premier league side with a new manager and know the importance that comes with playing another form team.

“We’ve got a solid dressing room and we know what we want to do in the transfer window. It’s certainly not my intention to get rid of some of the players. We’re trying to improve our squad but I would also caveat that everyone has a value even if that’s the top player in the League like Ivan Toney who we play on Saturday.

“I know their chairman and directors and they will not want to see him go anywhere. We’re trying to add to our squad as well and we may well lose one or two of those who don’t feature every week buts that’s the evolution of football.

“It’s the game between the cubs who I love and have supported for over thirty years.  It’s a great club run by a great chairman and two other great directors and of a course a good friend of mine Barry Fry.

“Do I want to win? Yes! Will I have the same passion and commitment to winning the game? Yes! Is my love and loyalty on the day for Gillingham Football Club? Yes!”
