Stevenage are believed to have requested permission to speak to Gillingham manager Steve Evans over their vacant position.

Evans, 59, has been with Gillingham since 2019 and has won 33.6% of matches during his time there.

Boro are in the hunt for a new boss after parting company with Alex Revell earlier this week.

The Gills have finished 10th in both of the last two seasons in the third tier under Evans guidance.

However, they have started this campaign poorly and are currently 19th in the table, two points above the relegation zone.

Having been knocked out of the FA Cup at Cheltenham Town on Tuesday night, Evans suggested he knew nothing of the approach, but didn’t seem to be uninterested in the move to the League Two side:

“I have just been made aware of it by our media department and that is something that the chairman and the club have to speak about, not for me, I will speak to the chairman about it as you would expect.”

“I don’t know how accurate that is. I am a football manager, I want to win games, I want to have a chance. I don’t know if there has been an approach.”

“I know Stevenage as a club, I know the personnel, but that is for Paul Scally and Gillingham Football Club to speak of and obviously they need to give clarity on if because I am not sure that is right or wrong.”

Evans has been made the favourite to land the position at Stevenage with some bookmakers and should he leave Gillingham, a duo of Neil Smith and Mark Patterson are tipped as likely to replace him and Paul Raynor.
