New manager Steve Evans is hoping his spell at Gillingham will bring success to the club.
The former Peterborough United boss was unveiled as the new Gills manager at a press conference on Thursday afternoon with Paul Raynor announced as his Assistant at Priestfield.
Having agreed terms with Chairman Paul Scally on Sunday and after negotiating his departure from Peterborough where he was still under contract, Evans takes the reins at Gillingham with a vision to bring success to the club:
“I’ve seen the passion and drive of the Chairman. Myself and Paul Raynor will work hard to create a team who people want to see play.”
Having replaced Steve Lovell, Evans knows he has big boots to fill:
“I was never a legend anywhere in terms of being a footballer. I know how well Steve Lovell was liked and he’s a friend of the club and the Chairman.”
Meanwhile, Evans wasted no time in making his first signing, announcing that Connor Ogilvie has agreed a two year deal with the club:
“On Sunday, after accepting the job, I asked the Chairman to contact Tottenham and earlier today he completed. We are delighted.”
Meanwhile, Paul Scally understands that bringing in Evans won’t be universally liked by fans, but is hoping it’s a move that brings success to Gillingham:
“I’m really looking forward to working with Steve. He finally became available on Sunday night.”
“I’m grateful for the support of the fan base. I have made a decision which is in the bests interests of the club and I want fans to trust my decision.”
“Our main objective is to support the team and build our fans of the future.”
“I’ve known Steve for a long time. He is no priest but I want someone to motivate the players and play exciting Football.”
Scally did however admit he is thinking about his own future at Gillingham after receiving some abuse from fans last season:
“I am considering my position. I am not prepared to accept the level of abuse I’ve had in the last few games.”
