Evans – Gills struggling for numbers
Evans – Gills struggling for numbers

Gillingham’s injury problems could mean they are unable fill the bench again for Saturday’s trip to Sheffield Wednesday, manager Steve Evans has admitted.

Speaking ahead of their Hillsborough trip on Saturday, their first visit there in almost twenty years, Evans said: “We still have an extensive injury list. Will we fill the bench? Possibly not. We might be light on numbers, but we’ve got a fantastic dressing room.”

“We can’t think about who we’re leaving behind and we will focus on the players we have available.”

“I look forward to taking us to Hillsborough. We can be organised and efficient.”

Evans could be without Ryan Jackson, Robbie McKenzie and Rhys Bennett after the trio limped off during Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Cheltenham Town in the FA Cup at Priestfield.

Should they all be missing, Gerald Sithole, Bailey Akehurst and Harvey Lintott could come into contention for starting places after coming on from the bench against Cheltenham.

With Mustapha Carayol hopeful of taking his place in the squad after missing the Cheltenham game, Evans will have to call upon all of his available resources for one of the most challenging games of the season.

Stuart O’Keefe has recently joined Olly Lee on the sidelines along with David Tutonda and Daniel Phillips whilst Charlie Kelman is back with parent club QPR despite his loan running until January.

Going to Hillsborough very light on numbers, Evans appreciates the challenge his side faces and says he respects their opponents:

“Darren Moore for me, is a top manager. He did very well at West Brom and of course at Doncaster.”

“We will have to be very good without the ball in terms of shape and discipline.”

“We have to go there with a good togetherness,” Evans reiterated. “We have a fantastic dressing room.”

“We are taking near 600 fans. For me, every game is exciting. If we perform to the level we did at Bolton, we’ll be in the game.”

“I am expecting Saturday to be as difficult as it normally is at Hillsborough. I have always rated Bannan, and there are five or six other outstanding players.”

With such a large travelling support, Gillingham will be hoping they can pull off the almost impossible and come away with at least a point, a point that could go a long way to seeing them stay in League One come the end of the season.
