This weekend the British Rallycross Championship heads to Mallory Park for round two of the 2013 season.
Kent’s UK Battery Sales Rallycross team will be lining up with Stuart Emery driving his Peugeot 206 in its distinctive paint scheme, against some of the fastest cars in the field once more.
Stuart is hoping that he can continue the form shown in round one in round two, even though he revealed something that could put him at a slight disadvantage to some of his competitors at Mallory Park.
He said: “Round two at Mallory Park will be interesting as it will be my first time there, so I will have to learn it quickly! With this in mind, I would be more than happy to equal my result from Lydden, but in Rallycross anything can happen…. and normally does.
Stuart is also hoping that he can challenge Ash Simpson for the title this season and expects it to be an entertaining and closely fought season.
He added: “We are going to contest the whole of the 2013 season and I always have the mind-set that I want to win the championship. Ash will be very difficult to beat this year, but I beat him to two Championships in 2008 & 2009 so I know it can be done. We have a few things that are due to be changed on the car, so I’m hoping that will help as we go through the season.”
Unlike some motorsports where drivers have pit crews and garages of mechanics to fix and put together their cars, during and before race weekends. Stuart however works on his car himself in his spare time.
Talking about the time he spends fixing and preparing his car to go racing, he added: “I dread to think of the hours I put it, suffice to say that as well as a full time job, I’m regularly working in my garage until gone midnight, so I guess it’s a labour of love.
“Rallycross is a tough form of motorsport, but if the car is built right it will withstand the punishment we put them through. Pretty much everything on the car is uprated, but even then we do still get failures. I have been breaking driveshafts, which is the next thing to be upgraded with stronger aircraft grade steel shafts.
There are a number of faster cars on the grid as we discovered in part one of our exclusive with Stuart, but there is one front runner that they all have to beat.
Stuart added: “Ash Simpson is one of the most talented drivers currently in British Rallycross….and he’s arguably in the best car, so I have my work cut out this year. As I said, I have beaten Ash to two Championship before and I don’t think there’s anyone else can say they have done that, so he certainly doesn’t faze me. In all sports you should strive to compete with the best and Rallycross is not different.”
Finally we asked Stuart how it was that he managed to find his way into motorsport and in particular Rallycross.
He revealed: “I have always been a motorsport fan, but particularly Rallycross. As a family, we would go to Lydden regularly when I was younger and sit on the hill watching my idol Will Gollop with all the other spectators.
“I was lucky enough to get my first Rallycross car in 1999 and I’ve only missed one season since. There’s just something special about hitting the loose sections at around 70mph in a 300bhp car on slick tyres.”
