Having failed to make the most of their first half chances. Maidstone United were forced to settle for a point against a determined Welling United on Easter Monday. After the game, Maidstone manager George Elokobi gave his thoughts.
“It’s a point in the right direction towards our objective this season.” he said.
“I think that it was the best that we’ve played at home for the first thirty minutes then, all of a sudden, we lost control of our intensity for the last fifteen minutes going into the break, but I really liked our control of possession and how we controlled the territory for the first thirty minutes.”
“We got into some fantastic areas but that second goal was lacking. We created so many chances. Their keeper was excellent in the first half. He made so many one on one saves so we didn’t capitalise. If you create these chances you’ve got to finish them off.”
He continued: “Second half we tried to get back to what got us the lead but one minute of lack of concentration or tactically not being switched on doing our jobs in and around our box and that’s what led to their equalising goal from a long throw.”
“I said to the boys at half time that they’ve (Welling) still got something to play for so we’ve got to be mindful. We’ve got to try to go for the second goal. We’ve got to maintain the same courage. We’ve got to maintain the same bravery to carry on playing and not to resort to too many long balls.”
“We know that tactically they changed shape but that didn’t matter to us at the time. We had to make sure that we carried on to creating and to get into the final third and there needed to be movement but we didn’t quite manage that in the second half and we will have to look at ourselves as a management team and ask ourselves why didn’t that happen.”
“We were a little deeper in the second half in terms of the distance between our defensive unit and our forward unit and we weren’t as compact. I’ll have to look at it to make sure that we try and get it right on Wednesday night.”
Despite conceding two points which meant that they dropped down to fifth place in the league table, Elokobi remained positive. “It’s not a stumble” he said.
“We’ve not lost the game. We’ve got to look at all the positives. We created so many chances.”
Elokobi joked: “We probably scored too many goals on Friday (five at Eastbourne Borough) so it’s important that we are creating these chances and we’ve got to be nice and composed and make sure that we finish those chances off.”
