Gillingham skipper Max Ehmer has elected to move to Bristol Rovers instead of staying at Priestfield.
The 28 year old was out of contract at the Kent club, but despite being wanted by manager Steve Evans, a firm offer of a new deal wasn’t possible and the central defender has decided to move to the League One rivals.
Ehmer needs no introduction to life in League One having played 250 times for Gillingham in all competitions. The central defender also chipped in with 15 goals across his five years, including a total of seven in the 2016/17 season.
Prior to his move to the Gills, Ehmer had two loans at Yeovil Town, a spell at Preston North End and seasons with both Stevenage and Carlisle United.
Speaking to the club website about his move, Ehmer said: “I’m ecstatic to be joining Bristol Rovers, speaking to the gaffer I got a sense of the direction of the club. He’s a young coach who’s looking to play the right way and that really excites me!”
“I’ve played here four or five times in the past and every time it felt like a sell-out, the fans are so loud. It makes me excited and I can’t wait to get started.”
Manager Ben Garner added: “Max is a very good defender who is proven at this level. He is strong & robust being virtually ever-present for Gillingham over the past few seasons. Max is also a good passer of the ball and effective from set-pieces at both ends of the pitch.”
The loss of Ehmer will be a big blow to Evans and Gillingham fans alike.
A real leader and one of the longest serving players at the club, losing Ehmer for next season will leave a huge hole in Evans’ defence.
With just seven contracted first team players for the season ahead, Evans has told both Lee Hodson and Barry Fuller they are surplus to requirements at Priestfield.
Until a new season start date and budget are confirmed, Evans has said he is unable to make firm offers to players. That date clearly can’t come quick enough.
