Captain Max Ehmer has apologised to the Gillingham fans that travelled to Harrogate on Monday only to see their side easily beaten 5-1.
Gillingham’s Play Off hopes were badly hit by Easter Monday’s second half capitulation at the hands of Harrogate Town – a result that slipped Stephen Clemence’s side out of the Play Off places.
Going into the final four games and the trip to Valley Parade to face Bradford City on Saturday, skipper Max Ehmer has been talking to KSN with the Gills finding themselves nineth in the League One table, two points and two places outside the last Play Off place held at the moment by Crawley Town, who have played two games fewer!
“We were gutted and want to apologise to the fans who made the long trip,” the Gills skipper said, reflecting on Monday’s defeat with KSN.
“First half we were the better side, but second half they came out on the front foot and after they scored it was just a catalogue of errors; we didn’t react to make sure another goal didn’t go in which is something that we sat down on Tuesday to talk about, to make sure that it doesn’t happen again – it’s a learning curve for everyone, but the game has now gone and we look forward to the next game.”
“What goes on in the dressing room after games stays in there, but there were words said and the overall feeling was gutted and angry with ourselves first and foremost. We all learn for it, and we must make sure it does not happen again.”
“Once you’ve been in the game a while, you can learn to forget games like Monday, but I’m of the nature that win, lose or draw, I like to look forward as what’s gone doesn’t really matter now.”
“It is all about the next game and Bradford and that is all we are looking forward to now. We are going to face a big crowd at a big club – it is always a tough place to go. They have not had the best of seasons this year – we have our game plan and will be fully ready to make things right from Monday.”
“It’s almost a case that we need to remember Monday’s result, but we have to forget about it as well – the game’s gone now and the result has happened, so it’s making sure that we move on being positive into the next game and making sure that we pick up the spirits that we need to be ready for the game.”
The skipper is in line for his 397th appearance for the Club taking him above Paul Smith in the appearance numbers, a fact that the German defender admitted that he was immensely proud of his achievement, saying:
“I’m really proud of my record, but I want to keep going and I can only keep going by doing well, so I have to make sure that those 5-1’s don’t happen again!”
“I am loving my time at the Club, loving the staff, and working with all the boys in the dressing room, and I want to keep going, but I am only going to keep making the appearances if I am playing well, so I have got to keep doing that!”
