EFL Trophy draw

The draw for the first knock out stage of the EFL Trophy has been announced.

Following their qualification from the group stages, Gillingham have been drawn away to League Two Cambridge United with the tie to be played on a date to be confirmed.

It will be the first time that the Gills have travelled to the Abbey Stadium for a competitive match for the first time since August 2003, when Andy Hessenthaler’s side won 2-1 in a League Cup tie with goals from John Hills and Nyron Nosworthy sending Gillingham through to a game against Stoke City.

For the record, the Gills side that night was Jason Brown, Barry Ashby, Ian Cox, Chris Hope, Nosworthy, Hills, Mark Saunders, Nicky Southall, Danny Spiller, Paul Shaw, Mama Sidibe with subs Tommy Johnson, Hessenthaler himself and David Perpetuini.

This will be the fourth time that the two side have been drawn together in this competition in its various previous guises – now of course known as the Papa John Trophy – and every game has seen the home side win 2-0, with the Gills having the advantage by two wins to one.
