Kent captain Charlotte Edwards hit an unbeaten century to lead England Women to a 181-run victory in their first warm up game in New Zealand.

They beat New Zealand emerging players, ahead of the T20 and one day international series against New Zealand women.

After winning the toss Edwards opened the batting and put on 40 with Beth Morgan before Morgan was bowled in the seventh over. Edwards went onto share a 71-run partnership with Sarah Taylor as the pair brought up 100 runs for England off 98 balls.

Taylor hit straight to mid-on halfway through the nineteenth over to depart for 32 but left England looking comfortable on 111 for two.

Edwards found the ropes on 17 occasions as she continued to add runs with Lydia Greenway, Arran Brindle and Heather Knight before retiring on 123, leaving England on 234 for five.

The tourists’ lower order put on 58 in the final 11 overs with Danielle Hazell and Georgia Elwiss finishing on 19 and six not out.

England posted 292 for the loss of nine wickets from their 50 overs.

Anya Shrubsole dominated the bowling attack for England taking five for five and left New Zealand emerging players struggling on 25 for two after just six overs.

Hazell continued to exude the pressure claiming the wicket of the host’s top scorer Anna Peterson (42) who picked out Greenway at deep mid-wicket. After Danielle Wyatt ran out Janet Brehaut, Hazell struck three balls later trapping Melinda Hodgson leg before to leave the emerging players on 81 for six.

Shrubsole returned for a final spell and cleaned up the tail taking a further three wickets which saw Jenny Gunn take an outstanding catch at mid-on.

England claimed a 181-run victory over New Zealand emerging players who were bowled out for 111 in 38.1 overs.

Charlotte Edwards said: “We had a good day out there today with some great individual performances. Everyone enjoyed being back outside and I was really pleased with how the team performed.

“Anya put in a fantastic performance with the ball, it’s great to have her back in the team.

“I was delighted to get out there today and get some runs under my belt and we are all looking forward to moving into the twenty 20 format on Monday.”

England will play New Zealand emerging players in their next warm up game on Monday 13th February.
