Charlotte Edwards led her team to a 32-run victory over India today in their second group game of the ICC Women’s World Cup.Charlotte Edwards15

After being inserted, the Kent captain anchored the innings with a patient century posting 109 to become the all-time leading run scorer in ODI women’s cricket. The captain found the boundary on 16 occasions and shared a 100-run partnership with Sarah Taylor (35) as England finished on 272-8.

Katherine Brunt and Anya Shrubsole then rattled through the Indian top order to reduce the hosts to 40-3 after ten overs. Sussex left arm spinner Holly Colvin allowed just 29 runs from her 10 overs before Brunt returned for a second spell, to claim a further two scalps to wrap up the game with figures of 4-29. India finished on 240-9.

After the game Katherine Brunt said: “We’ve taken wickets, catches and our opportunities today and Charlotte was superb with the bat. That was probably one of the best hundreds I’ve seen Charlotte make, she set a massive platform for us.”

“All credit to Harmanpreet Kaur she batted brilliantly, she took the risks and batted for her team, but we knew if we kept things as tight as possible we could restrict them from scoring.

“We were all fired up for the game, Anya did a good job at the start and Holly showed us what a spinner can do if you work hard and really tie batters down in the middle. Everyone made a contribution and that was clear to see out there today.”Charlotte Edwards18

Charlotte Edwards commenting on the team’s performance and claiming her seventh ODI century said: “Today was about character, coming out and giving a good team performance and we certainly did that; the standards we’ve set today are those that we want to continue.

“Jhulan Goswami bowled exceptionally well upfront, Sarah and I knew we had to ride it out and then we kicked on; once you get in on this pitch it’s very hard for people to get you out.

“I’m very proud of the team and pleased to be able to contribute, it meant a lot to me as today was about the team. The record is something for me to look back on at the end of my career not something I’ll focus on at the moment.

“I’m delighted with a win and that a lot of people have contributed to it, now we have to carry our form on from here.”
