Manager Justin Edinburgh was pleased to have taken a point from Gillingham’s game against Swindon Town on Tuesday night.
The Gills had to come from behind though as former loanee Michael Doughty put the visitors 1-0 up from the spot early in the second half.
However, the introduction of Rory Donnelly in the 70th minute made all the difference as the substitute scored the equaliser a minute after coming on to the delight of Edinburgh:
“I’m pleased for Rory, as he perhaps lost a bit of form towards the end of last season, but that goal will do him no harm – it was a sublime finish.”
“From the day he walked in here, he’s been a fantastic member of the group, there’s no pulling him off the ceiling or picking him off the ground. He works tirelessly for his team, and in team games in training everybody would want him on their team.”
“You work and try to find where these runs of goals come from – let’s hope it’s the start of another!”
It was a frustrating night though for the Gills as they struggled to break down a Swindon side that were intent on playing for a point and Edinburgh realises there are going to be games like that this season:
“As a group we want, and sometimes expect, to win. We continued to probe and pass, it was very congested and it was difficult to find areas to open them up but we stuck to the task.”
“Falling behind was the worst case scenario for us in the game, but the players found some real resolve. Again, to come from behind in the games has shown the real sense of character that is in the team.”
“I don’t want it to be a habit that we’re going behind in games. It’s something that we need to address, but I certainly felt the goal was against the run of play.”
There was bad news for Edinburgh prior to the game with Bournemouth striker Joe Quigley having to cut short his loan after picking up an injury against Bury at the weekend:
“Joe Quigley has done his ACL and he’s out for the season.”
“It’s a real blow for the group to come in and hear that news, and it’s a real tough blow for Joe. We have to dust ourselves off and hope Joe gets on the road to recovery.”
“It’s tough for the Chairman and the Club, as we don’t have unlimited resources. However, we’ll look to get a few bodies in, because what we’ve got come the end of the month is what we need to get us through to January.”
Edinburgh is expected to dip back into the loan market to find a replacement for Quigley whilst still looking for more cover in other areas of the pitch.
