Gillingham will use Leicester City as inspiration when they face Millwall this weekend for a place in the League One play-offs.
Justin Edinburgh’s side go into the game on Sunday sitting eighth in the league having dropped out the top six in the past few weeks and know they must beat Millwall to stand a chance of securing a place in the play-off places.
With Scunthorpe United (seventh) heading to Sheffield United and Barnsley (sixth) going to league leaders Wigan Athletic, Gillingham will be hoping both are restricted to draws at the very best to stand a chance of climbing back into the top six.
The fate of the Kent side is largely out of their own hands, but manager Justin Edinburgh believes his team must draw inspiration from the Premier League winners:
“Leicester will inspire every football team around the country and the world because they’ve shown what can be achieved if you get the right balance, team spirit and belief, and that’s what is comes down to.”
“Will it be a recurring thing? Who knows. But it certainly gives everyone a bit of optimism. I believe we deserve to be in those play-offs.”
“We still have that glimmer of hope and I believe we’ll win our game, and when that happens and the final whistle goes we’re reliant on two other teams and that’s difficult, but they’ve got a duty to do and I’m sure they’ll do it.”
“Our job is quite clear – there’s no other result we need other than a win. We know what we need to do, there’s no grey area for us, nothing less than a win will be enough for us to get where we want to be.”
“I believe the games the other two opponents have are very tough games. Wigan will be looking to secure the title in front of their home fans and gain as many points as they possibly can.”
“It’s the same with Sheffield United, they’ll want to put on a display of their own. We know the opponents for the other two sides but we have to park that to the side, really.”
“The only game we can affect, and must affect, is Millwall on Sunday and if we do that I’m sure there’ll be some twists along the way. There’s always a surprise at the end of the season.”
