One goal and a penalty save were enough to see the Gills beat MK Dons on Saturday at home, and move into the top half of the table.
It was a fourth league win on the bounce for Justin Edinburgh’s men and a nice early birthday present from his team, ahead of the big day today.
Speaking after the final whistle, Gills’ manager, Edinburgh, was an understandably happy man, saying “it was a tough game against a rejuvenated MK Dons side, and a difficult time to face them, but of late, we’ve been good at home. I thought it was a really good all-round performance today, everyone was aggressive, committed and that was what we had asked.”
“Stuart (Nelson) has made a game changing save and I’m pleased for him as he’s been the mainstay behind the calmness we’ve been portraying. The penalty save was big and we said at half-time that we needed to take the momentum from that situation. We always feel we are a danger from set-pieces and it was a great header from Cody (McDonald) to get us the three points. I don’t think there was too many chances in the game and it could have gone either way.”
“We’ve had to defend very well today and I thought the two centre-halves (Max Ehmer and Bailly Cargill) stood firm under a lot of pressure. That’s the first time we’ve won one-nil this year so it shows how massive the clean sheet is. It’s a big result for the group to build on and we’re starting to find some consistency here at home.”
