Justin Edinburgh concedes Gillingham’s last game of the season is now like a cup game.
Their 2-1 loss at Burton Albion on Saturday saw the home side all but promoted from League One and left The Gills eighth place in League One with their hopes of securing a play-off place now hanging by a thread.
With Barnsley having drawn 2-2 with Colchester United and Scunthorpe United beating Port Vale 1-0, The Gills saw their position slide, but Colchester’s 98th minute equaliser at Barnsley leaves a glimmer of hope going into next Sunday’s game against Millwall at Priestfield and Edinburgh knows his side have no option other than to win and hope both Barnsley and Scunthorpe United slip up:
“It’s a cup game now, one game left. The season goes to the last game, and I suppose Barnsley and Scunthorpe can’t play for draws (next Sunday against Wigan Athletic and Sheffield United respectively).”
“We’ll keep going while there’s an opportunity – there’s big things on the line, we’ve got a chance to get in the play-offs, something that the players, manager and fans may not get to experience for years to come.”
The Gillingham manager was however left to reflect on yet another game that saw his side beaten late on when they seemed destined for a point:
“We’ve lost another football match; I’m angry with how we’ve conceded in stoppage time. I can’t accept that.”
“We started slowly, but we weathered the storm, regrouped and were worthy of an equaliser. In all, from our performance, I felt we deserved something out of the game.”
“But we can’t allow a free header in the box with three minutes to go when our livelihoods are at stake. It’s unacceptable.”
Injuries to Bradley Garmston (hamstring) and Aaron Morris (knee) put a dampener on the day with the pair forced off in the opening 16 minutes of the game.
Edinburgh now has a full week to prepare for a game in which his side have no choice than to beat local rivals Millwall in what will be a packed Priestfield.
