Edinburgh – Gills are hitting form

Gillingham boss Justin Edinburgh feels his side are coming into good form at just the right time after winning 1-0 at Bury.

The Gills’ bid for promotion from Sky Bet League One faltered with three straight defeats but the win at Gigg Lane made it four unbeaten for Edinburgh’s men and keeps them fourth in the table.

Luke Norris claimed a 27th-minute opener with his third goal in five games before Gillingham held on to register their first away win since Boxing Day.

“It was a really tough encounter,” said Edinburgh. “There wasn’t a lot of clear-cut chances. There were a lot of balls into both teams’ areas. The ball pinged about for the goal and Luke dispatched it very well.”

“He’s come back into the team and been in a really good vein of form.”

“We then had a couple of chances in the second half on the counter-attack when we could have put the game to bed.”

“But we stood up to everything they threw at us, so it was a fantastic three points and clean sheet.”

“It’s been far too long since our last away win. We’ve probably played better than today and got nothing.”

“But games are running out now so it’s all about the points and we earned three valuable ones today.”

“Our form’s getting better at the vital time. There’s still enough points to play for, so we have to keep chasing the pack.”

Bury went closest early on as Danny Mayor, Ryan Lowe and Joe Riley all fired over from just outside the box.

But the visitors broke the deadlock when Josh Wright’s 20-yard strike was blocked and Norris turned in the loose ball from close range.

Lowe then turned Riley’s cross over but the Gills almost doubled their lead just after the break as Chris Neal tipped over a Ryan Jackson shot.

Dominic Samuel also went close for the visitors before Bury took charge, with a Chris Hussey free-kick cleared off the line.

Substitute Danny Rose was then denied by goalkeeper Stuart Nelson while John O’Sullivan and Riley blazed over as Bury lost their first home game in eight in the league.

Manager David Flitcroft said: “We conceded a sloppy goal. We had opportunities to clear it and once they went 1-0 up they made it very difficult for us.”

“There was a lot of gamesmanship but fair play to them, they produced three points from it. It’s about getting three points and they got them today.”

“Gillingham are a very resilient side, they work hard and they are up there in the league by rights.”

“I didn’t think they offered much going forward but defensively they really stuck to their task.”

“We moved the ball well, we got it wide and got some fantastic balls in, but we just weren’t ruthless enough in both boxes.”

“The quality of the balls we put in, if they come in against us they go in (to the goal), so I’m disappointed we didn’t score with the amount of chances we created, but there are positives to build on.”
