Manager Justin Edinburgh was full of praise for his Gillingham players after pulling off a late draw against Preston North End.
The Gills trailed 2-0 at the break with Jermaine Beckford and Callum Robinson having put the home side into a comfortable lead after a first half that was dominated for large parts by those in white.
However, Jermaine McGlashan celebrated his birthday by pegging it back to 2-1 on 58 minutes and then Leon Legge scored with a looping header in the 91st minute to snatch a point.
Having seen his side show great character to come back, Gills manager Justin Edinburgh was understandably full of praise for his side:
“It’s fantastic to come back from two goals behind against a very good Preston side and it took all we had to get a point.”
“I thought for as much possession as they had there were a lot of long range shots and there wasn’t too much to concern us.”
“We are disappointed with the first goal as its come from a goal kick – we are up against good players with quality and they punished us.”
“To concede that second goal as late as we did in first half stoppage time it was a big blow but credit to the payers as they dug deep, found that resilience and character to get back into the game.”
Edinburgh went on to explain how a sense of belief in the side saw Gillingham create more and ultimately get their rewards:
“I felt we needed a bit more belief in possession of the ball, at times we perhaps underestimate ourselves with how good we can be.”
“Glenn (Morris) made a really good save at 2-1 and from there on in I felt we grew in stature.”
“They went right until the end and got that late equaliser which was a fantastic goal.”
With their League One status now assured and nothing really to play for, Gillingham can play these last three games with freedom and fans might be in for a real treat.
