Gillingham manager Justin Edinburgh feels the fans have a big role to play in the last eight games.
His side entertain Coventry City at Priestfield on Saturday as they begin their League One run in.
Sitting in the play-off positions, Edinburgh hasn’t given up hope of a top two finish, despite sitting eight points behind Wigan Athletic in second place, but crucially with a game in hand.
With this weekend’s game set to be pivotal after going four games unbeaten, Edinburgh is starting to find he’s got selection dilemmas with both John Egan and Bradley Dack almost back to full fitness.
The pair will miss this weekend’s game, but could come into contention for next Saturday’s clash at Sheffield United.
Both will provide a big boost to Edinburgh and Gillingham upon their return, but in the meantime, the boss is happy with the squad and has paid tribute to the backing from the club’s fans and is pleading with them to keep with his side over the coming weeks:
“Stay with us. We’ve gone such a long way in such a short space of time. We are in a fantastic position, we’re all going to be nervous, we’re all going to be anxious, but much as they did against Crewe, they play an invaluable part.”
“The numbers we took to Southend, we took two thousand and two hundred to Bury which is crazy. They travel in their numbers and we really need to make sure we look back with no regrets at the end of the season.”
Sitting fourth in the league going into this weekend’s game, four points above Barnsley in eighth, Edinburgh is most definitely looking up rather than down:
“Whatever I say I’m going to be wrong, if I say we are chasing the top two, which we are, because I think we can, I’m going to be overly ambitious and crazy. If I look below then I’m being negative.”
“We can only affect what we’re doing and I honestly believe we can still chase the top two down.”
