Eaves looking to Gills future
Eaves looking to Gills future

Tom Eaves has been reflecting this week on his first season in Kent – and the Gillingham top scorer knows that it will be always a case of what might have been especially since Steve Lovell took over in October.

Eaves told KSN this week, “We had that really good run and from where we were really being quite remarkable – it would be nice to finish strong especially as they’ll be coming here looking for a big result.”

“I’ve really enjoyed this season as I’ve been able to play with quite a lot of freedom with the squad that we have.”

“It would have been nice to hit twenty goals – who knows I might get five on Saturday – I am pleased but also very frustrated.  I think I’m a lot more relaxed on the ball and a lot more relaxed going into games.”

One game left and whilst the Gills go into the season finale safe in the knowledge that it’s League One for Priestfield next season, Plymouth Argyle make the long trip from Devon with an outside chance of making the post-season – a fact that the Gills players are only too aware of as Eaves admitted, “Plymouth will come here wanting to win, but it will be nice for us to go out on a high and win the game especially after the great run that we did have and it really will be good to go out on a high!”

“They’re a good team – we know that!  They gave us a good game before Christmas, but we’ve prepared for this weekend like any other game this season.  They’re a good footballing team who will come here and look to play and so we know it’ll be a difficult task given what they’re playing for, but we’ll be at it after a hard week in training.”

“I personally think they’ll come here all guns blazing, as I think it’s six they have to make up on Charlton so maybe we can get the goals.”

“The fans have given me a really good reception this year that I’m really grateful for and it will be good to share the end of the season with them after the game as we go around!”

“It’s been great sharing the goals with the fans and hopefully it will continue two-fold next season. It’s difficult at the back end of the season as your body gets tired playing Saturday, Tuesday, Saturday, Tuesday and it’s important to try and stay as fresh as you can and stay focused as we can for one final game on Saturday afternoon.”

With up to twenty players having their contracts expire in the summer, Eaves was the first to admit that it had been a strange couple of weeks.

“It’s been tough,” said the striker, “it’s tough that you don’t know if the guy next to you will be here next season.  Going into the game Saturday taking one day at a time I think you’d be lying if you said it wasn’t in the back of your head and I guess that it’s the same for the players out of contract, if not worse!”

“It’s a difficult position to be in, but for me personally, everyone here at the club is a contracted player going into Saturday as with any other game.”

“One thing that the crowd will get this week, as we give them every single week is 100 per cent and I know that from the changing room.”

“With regards to the result, no fan at this club want more wins than the players to finish the season in style.”

“It’s difficult to put your finger on as to why we’ve won only four home games all year when we’ve won nine on the road – we just haven’t got the results that we wanted, even we’ve played well in a lot of those home games which is why we’re all do determined to end the season with a huge positive note come Saturday afternoon.”
